What does the word “fit” mean in regard to the college selection process? If a school fits, it feels like home. Like home, college should be a place where people feel valued and are given the support they need to succeed. Often times, students make the decision to attend a particular school based on its notoriety or because it is a family tradition. However, finding a college that fits involves evaluating interests, academic capabilities, educational goals, and learning preferences. It is important for students to identify which criteria is the most relevant to them, in order to determine the type of college experience they are looking for. For example, a student who prefers more direct interaction with teachers and peers should consider class size and student-teacher ratio. If a student is interested in a particular field, it is critical they select a college that offers a program in that area. Finding a college that “fits” is not an easy task. However, the time and consideration involved is well worth the effort. After all, it is the foundation for a successful future.

Attending a college that doesn’t fit is like wearing stiff, tight shoes for four years. It is uncomfortable but easily avoidable if one takes the time to find a good fit. A college that fits can be comfortably lived in and used as a springboard for a student’s future. Colleges are never one-size-fits-all. Students must pinpoint an ideal size, environment and distance from home by touring campuses, speaking with professors and current students and exploring the surrounding city. Because attending college is a bridge rather than a final destination, students must also seek out a school with academic excellence, field experience opportunities within their major, related clubs and local organizations. Each opportunity will help guide students into productive, meaningful careers. Personally, a college may be inexpensive or well-ranked, but if it doesn’t have an environment that suits me and it doesn’t give me the skills I need beyond graduation, I don’t think it fits. How did I find a college that fit? It wasn’t just by sitting in auditoriums or reading brochures. It was by trying on different schools until I found one with a size, environment and program that fit me like a cozy pair of slippers.
