Staying Healthy at College

By now you’ve probably heard of the freshman 15; that’s the 15 pounds
of weight that many freshmen gain during their first year of college.
Going from a structured lifestyle to late night study sessions (fueled by pizza and soda)
can quickly add additional pounds that first year. Establishing the
following habits early on will keep you healthy--even with your new
and busy schedule.
Food & Exercise
- Keep healthy snacks stored in your room (nuts, granola bars, popcorn) for when those late night cravings hit.
- Schedule three meals a day. By having a schedule in place and not skipping meals, you won’t find yourself starving at odd hours and overeating and/or eating fattening foods.
- Get your exercise. Join the gym, sign up for a fitness course, or simply schedule walks with friends between study breaks. Not only will exercise help keep you in shape physically, but it will clear your mind and keep you focused.
- Fight the urge to reach for food when stressed out. Try taking a walk instead.
- Remember, it is all about moderation. Enjoy a slice or two of pizza with your study group…just don’t overdo it.
Campus Safety
Remember, just being on a college campus—whether in the middle of a
big city or in a small, rural community—doesn’t mean you’re fully protected
from all crimes. You don’t, however, need to be paranoid and never leave
your dorm room! Some basic common sense will go a long way to keep you
safe on campus.
- Be aware. Know where you are and who is around you at all times. If you think you are being followed, go to the nearest building or group of students.
- Ask questions. If you don’t know the safety of a neighborhood, ask others before you go there. Travel with another person if at all possible.
- Travel in groups. Do not walk alone at night.
- Keep your ID. Do not allow anyone to use your student ID or your admission key-card for entrance to your dorm.
- Lock up. Always lock your door when you leave your room—even for a brief period of time.
- Run smartly. Never run in secluded areas or at dark. If you wear headphones, make sure you can still hear what is going on around you.
- Inform. Let others know where you are going and your estimated time of return.
- Trust. Always trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you feel uneasy, remove yourself from the situation.
